IARU R1 LogoOn the accasion of the World Amateur Radio Day, The International Amateur Radio Union Region 1 (IARU Region 1) unveiled a fully redesigned Homepage that offers a lot of functionalities and will allow various IARU Region 1 Working Groups to post and edit news.

The IARU Region 1 Homepage, also offers a forum  that brings the ham community together in discussions related to Amateur Radio.

Amateur Radio: Your Resource in Disaster and Emergency Communication

Each year on 18 April, radio amateurs celebrate World Amateur Radio Day. On that ‎day in 1925 the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) was founded. In 2009, ‎the theme of the event is Amateur Radio: Your Resource in Disaster and ‎Emergency Communication.‎

Arab Societies secure a seat on the IARU R1 Executive Committee

OD5TEAt the 21st Amateur Radio Union (IARU) Region 1 General conference in Cavtat, Croatia, Arab member societies successfully secured a seat in the IARU Region 1 Executive Committee repressing 92 countries in Africa, Europe and the Middle East. OD5TE – Hani will be on the Executive committee for a 3 years term receiving the highest number of votes among other members. This would have not been possible without the extraordinary work done by the Arab Societies and especially of the participating delegates: 7X2RO – Afif, A41KB – Abdullah, A41LK – Fahd, A61M – Mohammed, DL1BDF – Mustafa, OD5RI - Riri, OD5TE – Hani, SU1KM – Mohamed, IARS Iraq (by Proxy).  Other member societies have endorsed OD5TE to be on the executive committee.

Total voting Societies including proxies were 50 and the final results were as follows:

Sun City, South Africa will host the next IARU Region 1 Conference in 2011.


OD5RI Elected as IARU R1 IPHA Coordinator

OD5RICongratulations are in order to OD5RI- Riri for being re-elected at the International ‎Amateur Radio Union Region 1 General Conference, as the Information Programme for ‎Handicapped Amateurs (IPHA) coordinator for the next 3 years.

We are proud of this achievement and wish Riri the best wishes and success as the IPHA ‎coordinator and looking forward for the Arab Amateur Radio Societies to have an active role ‎in the program and support Riri in his task. ‎

IARU Region 1 Conference 2008 - Cavtat, Croatia

The 21st  IARU Region 1 General conference in Cavtat, Croatia has started. The opening ceremony  began with 9A5K - Kresimir Kovarik, President of the Hrvatski Radioamterski Savez (HRS) welcoming all delegates and invited guests. Guest from outside the IARU on the stage were Ms. Mira Buconjic, County Mayor of Dubrovnik-Neretva Country, Mr. Krešo Antonović, Director of Electronic Communications and Postal Service Directorate, Ministry of Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, Croatia and Mr. Miljenko Krvišek President, Croatian Agency for Telecommunications and Post.

Radio Amateurs of Lebanon (RAL) delegation represented by RAL president OD5TE - Hani is attending the Conference with OD5RI - Riri (RAL IARU Coordinator and Information Programme for Handicapped Amateurs (IPHA) IARU Region 1 Coordinator).  Arab Societies present are:  AMATEURS RADIO ALGERIENS (ARA) - 7X2RO, Afif; CLUB CENTRAL D’AMATEUR RADIO SCOUTS TUNISIEN (CAST) - DL1BDF, Mustafa; EGYPT-AMATEURS RADIO ASSEMBLY (EARA) - SU1KM, Mohamed; Emirates Amateur Radio Society(EARS) - A61M, Mohammed; ROYAL OMANI AMATEUR RADIO SOCIETY (ROARS) - A41KB, Abdullah and A41LK, Fahd. IARU REGION 1 STAMPThe Croatian Post has issued a postage stamp commemorating the event. The stamp will ‎be sold for 3.50 HRK (about 0.50 EUR) ‎ The IARU Region 1 General Conference is taking place in Cavtat, Croatia from 16 to 21 November 2008 and a special Event Station 9AØIARU will be active on the air during the event.

300 Lebanese Scouts to participate this weekend in the largest event on the airwaves


The Radio Amateurs of Lebanon (RAL) in association with the Lebanese Scouting Federation will be participating this weekend in the 51st Jamboree-On-The-Air (JOTA) / 12th Jamboree-On-The-Internet that will take place between 18 and19 October 2008.

Over 300 scouts from 29 scouting associations in Lebanon are expected to participate this year. JOTA will operate under OD5RAL on HF all bands and through Echolink Node: 70784 (OD5TE-R). The Amateur Radio station will be operated by Licensed Amateur Radio operators. 

JOTA/JOTI is an annual event that occurs every year on the third full weekend of October where hundreds of thousands of Scouts and Guides all over the world exchange greetings, learn about each others' country and culture, swap program ideas and make new friends by means of amateur radio over the airwaves and the internet. This Jamboree-On-The-Air (JOTA) is the largest annual event for Scouts.

JOTA/JOTI start at 00.00 hours Beirut time on Saturday and concludes 48 hours later at 24.00 hours Beirut time on Sunday. 

This a unique opportunity for each individual Scout to get the real feeling of belonging to a worldwide movement.

14055 Khz Interference

The IARU Region 1 Monitoring Service have alerted RAL  of intrusion activities on 14.055 Mhz USB Voice that are believed to be between the UNIFIL's Maritime Task Force (MTF) and the Lebanese Authorities.
Sample recordings include communication related to the following: S1, MIO, C1 Stations with vessel heading directions and interception request from F7 to intercept suspect 0010. Confirmation of E17 leaving Beirut harbor to intercept suspect 0010.
We ask you to please monitor 14.055 +/- Mhz and advise of similar activities and provide recordings if possible.
RAL is coordinating with the Lebanese Authorities, UNIFIL and IARU Region 1 Monitoring Service team to stop the intrusion.

OD5GA - Silent Key

It is with grief and deep sorrow that we announce the loss of our colleagueRawzat (Russ) Harb – OD5GA whopassed away in the US last week at the age of 87. He lived in Dearborn, MI most of his life and served as a Private First Class in the US army.He also holds a US general class callsign WA8YNJ. 














On behalf of the Radio Amateurs of Lebanon (RAL) and the Hams around the world, we extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences and sympathy to his family, friends and to all those who admired him as they mourn his loss‎. 

He is survived by his wife Maylan and children Abdullah (Albert), Tamer, Taha, Alberta, Mona and Salma. 

Rawzat’s body was transported to his hometown Kfarhouna where he was buried on Thursday July 10, 2008. May his Soul rest in Peace.
